The suanpan abacus consists of a rectangular, wooden, frame with thirteen vertical bars made from wire, holding seven black and brown wooden and bamboo counters in a sharp-edged diamond profile. Each row is split into two levels by a single horizontal bar with an ivory strip. The top section contains two beads known as 'heaven beads' with a value of five, while the lower section has five beads, known as 'earth beads' with a value of one.
